How to get section 8 housing for low income families in Illinois – The Illinois Section 8 program provides rental subsidies for low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled. HUD (Housing and Urban Development), or HUD for short, is the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development that funds the program and works with state and local housing authorities to administer it. The local public housing authority determines whether an applicant or property qualifies for Section 8 in Illinois, even though HUD sets income limits and other eligibility guidelines.

What is Income and household size for Illinois Section 8 ?
In order to qualify for Section 8, tenants must meet income and household size requirements. You can therefore only receive assistance if you meet the income requirements for a specific Illinois jurisdiction, which are determined by HUD based on the area median income. The Section 8 vouchers are allocated as vouchers (more on this later), and are only available to extremely low-income households, which earn 30 percent or less of the area median income for your household size.
A limited number of vouchers are still available to very low-income households earning not more than 50% of the median income. The median income for Illinois in 2021 was $62,992. A family of four must earn no more than $25,400 in Lake County to qualify as extremely low income, and a family of four must earn no more than $42,300 to qualify as very low income.
Eligibility of the home to be rented Illinois Section 8 program
Section 8 requires the applicant to choose a housing unit or dwelling that meets those requirements as well. Private or managed properties are therefore required to participate in the program, which also requires them to accept an inspection of the property, make necessary repairs, and adhere to all other program guidelines. Section 8 rental units are required to meet minimum health and safety standards, so local housing authorities inspect these units by their standards every year to renew their eligibility. The purpose is to ensure that Section 8 housing is safe and decent. A reasonable amount of rent on the other hand must also be considered. Each area of Illinois has fair rent limits set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. According to certain zip codes in Lake County, a two-bedroom property cannot exceed $1,820.
How to apply and wait on the section 8 Illinois waiting list
Applicants are subject to a waiting list, which is determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Housing authorities may give priority placement to families facing special challenges, such as those who may be evicted, involuntarily displaced, or living in substandard housing. When a housing authorities’ waiting list opens, a pre-application can be requested.
Waiting lists may open only every few years due to a lack of funding and high demand. You can now request aid when you have been selected; the voucher, as we mentioned, serves as proof that you qualify. If you receive an offer, you need to find a property that meets the requirements within 90 days.
Chicago Section 8 Waiting List
Illinois, as we have explained, selects recipients of Section 8 assistance based on waiting lists. In fact, the same procedure is followed across the nation. Please check the Cook County list’s status from time to time if you are interested. It is currently closed to new applications.
Aurora Section 8 housing authority waiting list
Only public housing units of five bedrooms are available in the Greater Aurora area. We are not accepting new applications for one-, two-, three-, or four-bedroom homes currently. This means that Section 8 is no longer accepting new applications for this area. Senior citizens 55 years of age and older who need only a two-bedroom apartment can apply for project-based vouchers, however. Documents needed to apply for Section 8 in Illinois
As a first step, applicants must be citizens of the United States or have legal residency status. Secondly, each household member must provide his or her social security number, state identification card, and birth certificate. Proof of income is also required for each household member, including:
- If applicable, the wages and salaries
- Benefits and subsidies under social security, if any
- Support for children and alimony, if applicable
- benefits from a pension plan if applicable.
Savings and assets must also be demonstrated. In Illinois, applicants who have criminal records involving drugs or violent acts are ineligible for Section 8 programs. A conviction for fraud or being evicted from a subsidised housing unit are also grounds for disqualification from Section 8 in the state.

An apartment choice voucher, or VHC for short, is actually a document that outlines the amount of assistance that has been granted to a given applicant.
Once you have received your voucher and your final approval, you can start looking for a new home for you and your family. In the case of a current rental agreement, you should inquire if the landlord accepts this form of payment.
He can then process your request after receiving all necessary documentation from you. The eviction process cannot be stopped by Section 8 assistance. Additionally, most vouchers will only be valid for the month you receive help.
